Troian Bellisario Explains How She Learned of Spencer and Toby's Fate on "Pretty Little Liars"

Pretty Little Liars fans were left with a few (OK maybe several) questions upon the series’ conclusion in 2017, with arguably one of the biggest question marks surrounding the fate of Toby (Keegan Allen) and Spencer (Troian Bellisario). While the rest of the show’s major “ships” were together by the end of the season 7 finale, Spoby was a little more up in the air.

Thanks to The Perfectionists, the PLL spinoff that aired earlier this year, fans were given some closure: through a line of dialogue between Mona (Janel Parrish) and an un-pictured Hanna (Ashley Benson), we learned that Toby and Spencer eloped somewhere down the line. Hooray! It turns out, however, no one really told Troian about the news. Oops!

In an interview with BuzzFeed, Troian revealed that she didn’t hear about Spoby’s marriage until Keegan texted her, telling her to look on Twitter where PLL showrunner I. Marlene King was posting about the characters' relationship. “She was writing a Twitter thread that was like 'Spencer and Toby eloped,’ ‘Spencer and Toby did this,’” Troian recalled. “She was essentially writing an episode of PLL, but on Twitter.”

And if you’re imagining Spencer and Toby getting hitched in a cute Vegas ceremony, you can think again. “They eloped in Pennsylvania, where the show was set,” Troian concluded. TBH, she’s probably right; seems like a practical choice that both Spencer and Toby would be down with.

After the PLL finale aired in June 2017, Marlene declared that Spoby was, according to her, “end game.” In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the showrunner further explained: “I hope fans got that…we literally did say, could we have a double wedding? Or should we have a triple wedding? That felt like it was a little too much. But I think they got their happy ending.”
