US Stocks Report Losses on Monday

U.S. market indexes were lower Monday.
For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20,650.21 for a loss of 13.01 points or 0.06%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,358.84 for a loss of 3.88 points or 0.16%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,894.68 for a loss of 17.06 points or 0.29%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 12.33 for a loss of 0.04 points or 0.32%.

Monday's market movers
Investors were concerned about overvalued stocks in pre-earnings trading on Monday. Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:
Vehicle sales for March are 16.6 million SAAR, below consensus of 17.4 million and reaching a two-year low.
The PMI Manufacturing Index decreased to 53.3 from 54.2.
The ISM Manufacturing Index decreased to 57.2 from 57.7.
Construction spending increased 0.8%, just below consensus of 1%.
In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses:
DuPont (DD) -0.82%.
Cisco (CSCO) -0.65%.
American Express (AXP) -0.61%.
Microsoft (MSFT) -0.49%.
Caterpillar (CAT) -0.46%.
JPMorgan (JPM) -0.35%.
In the broad market, losses were led by consumer discretionary stocks. Technology was lower for the day with the S&P 500 technology sector down -0.09%.
Small-cap stocks
In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,369.67 for a loss of 16.25 points or 1.17%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 828.37 for a loss of 15.80 points or 1.87%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,219.95 for a loss of 88.69 points or 1.07%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,538.96 for a loss of 94.13 points or 0.98%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,709.55 for a loss of 10.10 points or 0.59%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,045.53 for a loss of 0.53 points or 0.05%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,397.66 for a loss of 3.84 points or 0.27%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,307.46 for a loss of 2.61 points or 0.20%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 649.84 for a loss of 3.28 points or 0.50%.
