Zeeland Schools promotes summer reading by bringing books to kids

Zeeland Public Schools used the Reading Now Network Book Bike to deliver books to children in the district and promote summer reading.

ZEELAND — Families in the Zeeland area were treated to a special summer reading initiative last week.

Zeeland Public Schools administrators used the Reading Now Network Book Bike, a tool from the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District, to visit several neighborhoods in the district and deliver free books to children Friday, June 24.

The bike is customized with a cabinet to hold books in the front, forming a small mobile library. The district distributed nearly 100 books to kids in the community.

“It is so valuable for students to continue reading and practicing literacy skills throughout the summer months, and this was one more way that ZPS was able to stay connected with families and encourage students to continue reading for enjoyment this summer,” stated ZPS Superintendent Brandi-Lyn Mendham.

The bike is available for weekly checkout, made possible by the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation, according to the OAISD website.

The Reading Now Network is a collaboration between school districts from more than 20 West Michigan counties to improve early literacy and student achievement across all grade levels.
