As a plus-size person, it can be a radical act to wear something as simple as a swimsuit. While nowadays, you’ll catch me wearing the cutest, brightest (and sometimes tiniest) bikinis I can find, I wasn't always this confident about bearing my tummy and curves.

Shopping for plus-size swimwear can be frustrating, and I’m far from alone. Gianna Angelina Bove, a curvy content creator and body acceptance advocate, says she spent her childhood scouring Walmart for tankinis because it was the only suit that would fit her curvy body.

“Only seeing plus-sized one-pieces, tankinis, swim dresses, swim skirts, and other full-coverage options—usually in awful patterns you’d never see in straight-size clothing—made me think that is what I had to wear,” she shares. “It wasn’t until recently, when I started following women on social media whose bodies look like mine, that I realized anyone at any size can wear a bikini."

Fortunately, many of the best swimwear brands like Eloquii, Swimsuits for All, Skims, and others have changed the style game for curvy women. Yesenia Torres, a style expert and the creative director at Eloquii, says the company is seeking to make fashion more accessible for plus-size customers (Eloquii carries sizes 14-32). “We believe that style should not be dependent on size and work to uplift our customers by providing trend-driven designs with impeccable fit," Torres says.

Ixim said she’s noticed a huge shift in what’s available on the marketplace for swim.

The good news is that there are now many more options available online than there used to be to accommodate larger bodies. Megan and Bove recommend online brands like Swimsuits For All, Skims, Curvy Beach, Good American, Adore Me, and Night Dive Swim, since they all have collections with fun designs in extended sizing.

Try something different.

Gabi Gregg, a designer and influencer who first went viral for posting a photo of herself in a bikini with the hashtag #fatkini and who also recently dropped a collection with Eloquii, notes that not all plus-size shoppers want the same thing. “The truth is that the plus-size customer is not a monolith...Some girls want coverage, while others feel comfortable showing more skin and are frustrated that they can’t find something skimpier,” she says.

Bove adds that a lot of what people in larger bodies tell themselves about what will look good or not on them is a mental game. “You’d be surprised how much you may have limited your options based on what the fashion industry and society has told us as curvy women we can and cannot wear," she says. Feel free to try something outside the box. You never know what may stick.

Consider where you’re going.

While stylists and plus-size fashion experts all agree that anyone can rock any style, it is important to remember where you will be wearing the swimsuit. So, a tiny bikini without cups may be fabulous for a pool day, but it might not be great for, say, waterskiing. Ixim also recommends jumping while trying on your bathing suit to see how it feels. “We run, we move, and we swim in our swimwear, so feeling confident and comfortable is important.”

Focus on quality and support.

“I do value quality, so I would urge shoppers to look for quality pieces that can last multiple seasons,” says Torres. While buying a new swimsuit every season can be fun, it can also get pricey. That’s why making sure you invest in quality fabric and design is important, says Ixim.

Looking for something with a built-in bra or adjustable straps can also be helpful for finding the perfect fit, adds Gregg.
