Stocks rose on Monday, providing relief to investors still smarting over last week's losses. The Dow Jones industrial average rose after six straight days of losses. That was welcome change after last week, the Dow's worst since November.

The Dow rose 135.10 points, or 1.1 percent, to 12,504.48.

The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 20.77 points, or 1.6 percent, to 1,315.99.

The Nasdaq composite index rose 68.42 points, or 2.5 percent, to 2,847.21.

For the year so far:

The Dow is up 286.92 points, or 2.4 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 58.39 points, or 4.6 percent.

The Nasdaq composite is up 242.06 points, or 9.3 percent.
