Video: Bird strike causes engine fire on Sunday American Airlines flight in Columbus

An American Airlines flight in Columbus and heading to Phoenix had to make an emergency landing back at John Glenn Columbus International Airport Sunday, after a bird strike caused the engine to catch fire shortly after takeoff.

American Airlines flight 1958, which left around 7:45 a.m., landed safely, and no one was injured during the incident. The airport was closed for a few minutes, causing only minor delays for other flights, said airport officials.

People in the Columbus area reported hearing strange engine sounds, and in one video, taken by a passenger, the plane's engine is shown catching fire.

The cause of the fire will be investigated by federal officials, either from the Federal Aviation Administration or the National Transportation Safety Board.
