This 11-year-old kid governor wants to be the country’s first lesbian president, and yes, please

Connecticut’s first openly gay kid governor has her eyes on the White House. Ella Briggs, 11, who ran on a pro-LGBTQ platform, was sworn in as kid governor in a January 18th ceremony as part of the state’s civics program for fifth graders that selects a student candidate in a statewide election. Now, the miniature politician has larger political plans in mind: to become the country’s first lesbian president.

When can we start canvassing?

Briggs, who attends Ana Grace Academy of the Arts Elementary Magnet School in Avon, Connecticut, was elected by 6,400 fifth graders from 87 schools across the state. During her swearing-in ceremony, she championed LGBTQ inclusion, saying,

“I will begin important conversations with students and adults all over this great state. We will talk about what it means to be accepting and respectful of everyone, including those of us in the LGBTQ community.”

At her inauguration, Briggs also announced plans to become “the first lesbian president.” And while some parents didn’t allow their children to attend the ceremony, she remained unfazed, telling the CTPost, “I’m just so happy that most kids in my class came. There were some kids who pulled out but you can’t do anything about that. Haters going to hate. It’s just so amazing being in a room full of people who accept me. It feels really good.”
