2018 Chevy Equinox diesel officially gets up to 39 mpg
We got a sneak peek at the 2018 Chevy Equinox diesel's fuel economy numbers about a month ago, but we couldn't be 100 percent sure they were perfectly accurate because they were internal estimates. Now, the EPA has given its official, certified ratings for the Equinox, and they're slightly lower in some regards, but not by much — and the all-wheel-drive model actually sees an improvement.
The front-wheel-drive model has the highest rating, at up to 39 miles per gallon on the highway, 28 in the city, and 32 mpg overall. Compared with the estimates, the highway number is 1 mile per gallon off, and the city number is off by 4.
The all-wheel-drive Equinox diesel actually improves over the estimates, and it's barely worse than the front-drive version. It gets the same 28 miles per gallon in the city and 32 overall as the front-drive model. On the highway, it dips below the two-wheel-drive variant by 1 mile per gallon to 38. Still, the highway rating is 1 mile per gallon better than the internal estimate. The city number is worse than the internal estimate by 3 miles per gallon.
These numbers also mean that the Equinox in both forms is still more efficient on the highway than two of the most efficient compact crossovers, the Toyota RAV4 hybrid and the Nissan Rogue hybrid. The RAV4 gets up to 34 mpg on the highway, and the Rogue hybrid manages 35 mpg on the highway. Both hybrids do have better city ratings. The Toyota gets 30 mpg, and the Nissan gets 31.
