Close call! In a new feature, Kate Upton revisited the time when she and her now-husband, Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander, nearly missed their own wedding in early November after his team went to Game 7 of the World Series—just two days before they were set to wed.

“Everybody is in Italy! Everyone is at the venue! We had an event that night and everyone’s texting us, saying your wedding is so pretty. Wish you were here!” Upton, 25, previously joked to Jimmy Fallon upon the pair’s return to the States.

Luckily for the couple, they were able to jet halfway around the globe immediately following the Astros’ win—to sunny Italy, where their family and friends were waiting. Here, a few fun details about the wedding, as Upton and Verlander, 34, recounted to Vogue.

The bride wore three dresses.

Upton donned three different outfits through their wedding weekend. The first was a red Valentino gown that matched Verlander’s custom-made red tuxedo jacket (the pair also asked their guests to wear red for the rehearsal dinner). The next day, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model wore a classic Valentino lace gown and swapped it out for a fun Christy Rilling Studio dress with a plunging back for the reception. “I wanted a dress that I could have fun in, but that still brought the glamour,” she told Vogue.

Tuscany holds romantic significance for the couple.

Tuscany was one of the first places that the pair vacationed together, and so it naturally topped their list of desired wedding locations. “We fell in love with the Rosewood Castiglion Del Bosco resort because of its amazing history and incredible scenery,” Upton said. The pair got married above the garden at the resort in what turned out to be the first ceremony ever held in that location.

Upton’s “something old,” “something borrowed,” and “something blue” were all the same thing.

The model’s elderly grandmother wasn’t able to make the trip to Tuscany for Upton’s wedding, but she wanted to make sure she was a part of the ceremony—and so she lent Upton her sapphire ring.

The couple’s guests got sporty in the run-up to the wedding.

Upton and Verlander wanted to make the wedding weekend feel like a family vacation, so they scheduled in something called the “Uplander Olympics”: a series of interactive games, including ping-pong, cornhole, a football toss, relay races and even a water balloon fight.

There were fireworks and karaoke too.

Upton surprised her husband with a firework display that lit up the Tuscan sky as they cut into their wedding cake. And after the reception dancing wound down, the pair kept the party going with late-night karaoke at a villa. Work hard, play hard!
