50 Cent Considering Legal Action Against NYPD Commander Who Allegedly Told Officers to Shoot Him·People

50 Cent is considering taking legal action against a New York City precinct commander who allegedly urged his officers to shoot the rapper ahead of a sporting event last spring.

According to a report from New York Daily News, the “In da Club” rapper, 43, was scheduled to attend an NYPD-sanctioned boxing match in June 2018 when deputy inspector Emmanuel Gonzalez allegedly made the threatening remarks.

“Mr. Jackson takes this threat very seriously and is consulting with his legal counsel regarding his options going forward,” a spokesman for 50 Cent (né Curtis Jackson) said in a statement to PEOPLE. “He is concerned that he was not previously advised of this threat by the NYPD and even more concerned that Gonzalez continues to carry a badge and a gun.”

A source told the Daily News that Gonzalez — who reportedly had sparred with the star previously — said during a roll call at the 72nd Precinct in Brooklyn that his officers should “shoot [50 Cent] on sight” should the rapper make an appearance at the match.

Gonzalez allegedly passed off the claim as a joke, but an NYPD spokesman tells PEOPLE the department is taking the threat seriously.

“The incident is under internal review,” says NYPD detective Martin Brown.

The Power actor also weighed in on Twitter, accusing Gonzalez of being a “dirty cop abusing his POWER.”

“This is how I wake up this morning… The sad part is this man still has a badge and a gun,” he wrote. “I take this threat very seriously and im (sic) consulting with my legal counsel regarding my options moving forward.”

Gonzalez’s beef with 50 Cent reportedly stems from an Instagram post the rapper shared after he learned Gonzalez was cracking down on the owner of Love and Lust, a club located in Brooklyn, last year.

In the since-deleted post, the rapper reportedly made threats against Gonzalez, including “get the strap.” The phrase — which 50 Cent has previously used on Instagram and popularized on his Starz TV show Power — is seen as slang for “get a gun,” but a rep for 50 Cent previously told Vibe it’s a “playful phrase used by Mr. Jackson to punctuate absurd and outrageous situations.”

In return, Gonzalez filed an aggravated harassment complaint against 50 Cent last spring, according to the Daily News.

Gonzalez reportedly alleged in the complaint that some of 50 Cent’s Instagram followers followed the rapper’s lead in attacking him online, leaving threatening comments such as “f— this commander” and “blast this fool.”
