50 Longest-Running Banks You Can Count On in Every State
Historic banks fell like dominoes during the Great Recession. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) closed more than 450 banks as a result of the 2008 financial crisis, including Washington Mutual, the largest bank failure in United States history. But while many storied institutions became victims of the market turmoil, some kept right on ticking and have been for hundreds of years.
If you’re looking for a trusted bank to keep your money in for years to come, look no further. GOBankingRates has uncovered the longest continuously running banks in America. Most of the companies listed predate ATMs, credit cards and the Federal Reserve. Three banks were founded before the New York Stock Exchange was created. And some of the companies you’ll find here are even older than the states they are headquartered in. But there are also a few that are barely older than PayPal (looking at you, State Bank of Arizona).
GOBankingRates combed through the FDIC’s Institution Directory and Deposit Market Share Reports to determine the longest-running banks headquartered in each state. To be eligible for the list, banks could not be a subsidiary of another institution. If a bank had merged with another company, its headquarters were required to remain within the same state. The results are compiled chronologically, starting with Rhode Island’s Washington Trust Company, of Westerly — founded all the way back in 1800. We’ve also included how much the banks have in total assets and the number of branches each bank runs inside their home state.
