6 Ways to Score ‘Senior’ Discounts on Car Rentals After Turning 50

Unless you’re visiting a walkable city like New York or Chicago, there’s a good chance your next vacation will require or benefit from a car rental. The problem is that finding the best value on a rental is anything but cruise control.

What is easy? Using a senior discount. Once you hit 50, you’re eligible for savings on car rentals. So you can book a coupe convertible and cruise the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway in style.

If slow-and-steady is more your speed, that’s fine, too. The following list of ways to score car rental discounts has something for everyone, whether you need a car for an hour or a week — or you want to rent a truck for a move. You don’t even need to join an organization like AARP — although doing so will give you more opportunities to save.

1. Rent from E-Z

E-Z Rent A Car offers 10% off to drivers who are at least 50 years old at the time of rental.

To redeem, you must book your reservation online and use the applicable coupon code. Visit E-Z’s coupons webpage and click “Redeem Now” and follow the booking process. The discount will automatically be applied to the “Promo or Corporate Code” line.

You can find E-Z locations at airports in 17 states, including several of the most traveled U.S. airports. There are even three locations in Puerto Rico.

2. Rent from Hertz

The Hertz Fifty Plus Program offers travelers age 50 and older savings of up to 20% off, available at participating Hertz locations around the world.

Simply book your trip online or by calling 800-654-3131. If you call, you’ll need to reference the Hertz Fifty Plus code 2007815.

You can even combine the Hertz Fifty Plus Program discount with other promotions, including those offered through the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program.

3. Rent from Sixt

Anyone 50 years and older can save a little extra on a luxury car rental from Sixt. Their fleet includes Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Land Rover and Mercedes-Benz, so you get a premium experience no matter where you’re traveling.

When you book through Sixt’s Senior Car Rental Discount webpage, a discount of up to 5% will automatically be applied. You will need to show identification upon pickup to prove your age.

Sixt’s senior discount is available at locations within the U.S.

4. Rent from Thrifty

Thrifty Car Rental’s Silver Club offers savings of 5% on time and mileage charges to renters 50 years old and up. Visit the Thrifty Silver Club webpage to book your car rental.

Thrifty has locations in most U.S. states as well as in other countries.

5. Join AARP

As soon as you turn 50 years old, you’re eligible to become a full AARP member. That means that along with discounts on cruise trips, you can enjoy big savings at certain rental car companies.

To take advantage of these discounted rates, go through AARP’s Member Benefits webpage. Click on “AARP Travel Center powered by Expedia,” or if you are interested in booking with a particular company, click on its name. The options include:

  • Avis Rent A Car

  • Budget Rent A Car

  • Budget Truck Rental

  • Payless Car Rental

  • Zipcar

At most car rental companies that partner with AARP, members save up to 30%. At Zipcar, members get 43% off an annual membership as well as a $40 driving credit.

6. Join AMAC

Join the Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC) after your 50th birthday, and you’ll enjoy discounts of up to 25% on car rentals.

AMAC has partnered with Car Rental 8 to provide discounts at various car rental companies, including:

  • Advantage Rent A Car

  • Alamo Rent A Car

  • Dollar Rent A Car

  • Europcar

  • E-Z Rent A Car

  • Fox Rent A Car

  • Hertz

  • Thrifty Car Rental

  • National Car Rental

  • Sixt

Book via AMAC’s website — click on the “Book Online Now” button — or call 888-958-2278 to take advantage of the discounts through Car Rental 8. You may be eligible for a free upgrade.

Or go right from AMAC’s website to that of Avis Rent A Car, Budget Rent A Car or Budget Truck Rental to book directly with one of those companies.
