$76 million ski-in Aspen mansion changes hands among Florida buyer, seller: See inside

An Aspen, Colo. mansion flipped Florida hands, selling for $76 million and breaking a top sale record for the lux ski destination.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the compound belonged to Florida-based real-estate developer Leathem Stearn and was bought by a limited liability company associated with Terry Taylor, a Florida car-dealership owner.

A video by the Architectural Digest showcased the Ute Avenue house when it was on the market for $75 million in 2022.

The 20,740 square-foot, four-story home has seven bedrooms, seven full-bathrooms, three half-bathrooms, an indoor pool, a bowling alley, a media room, a gym, a spa and a wine-tasting room. With close proximity to the Aspen Silver Queen ski gondola, the new residents will be able to ski back into the estate.

$25 million discount secured in deal

The home also features a lazy-susan breakfast nook that spins like a turn table giving all guests a different view of the surrounding Colorado landscape. Stearn's design utilized many custom materials and hidden utilities like the kitchen ovens behind an opaque sliding door and bedroom doors that look like they are part of contiguous wood panels.

“The buyer got himself a great property, and I hope he enjoys it half as much as I did,” Stearn told the WSJ.

The buyer, Taylor, is considered a private car dealership mogul. As reported by TheRealDeal, he has been buying up properties in Palm Beach and throughout South Florida. He recently bought the hollowed-out penthouse of the Tiffany & Co. building for $18 million, but he will need to put millions more in to finish the buildout.

The Apsen house was not on the market when it was sold, and Stearn had quietly been asking $95 million for it. Instead, the two struck a deal: Stearn knocked $25 million off the price in exchange for a home Taylor owned in Aspen’s Little Cloud subdivision.
