On a per-share basis, the Pittsburgh-based company said it had a loss of 84 cents. Losses, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, were 56 cents per share.

The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of three analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 99 cents per share.

The bauxite, alumina and aluminum products company posted revenue of $2.6 billion in the period, missing Street forecasts. Three analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $2.61 billion.

For the year, the company reported that its loss widened to $651 million, or $3.65 per share. Revenue was reported as $10.55 billion.

Alcoa shares have fallen 20% since the beginning of the year, while the S&P's 500 index has decreased almost 1%. In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, shares hit $27.18, a fall of 50% in the last 12 months.
