On a per-share basis, the South San Francisco, California-based company said it had a loss of 49 cents.

The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 80 cents per share.

The biotechnology company posted revenue of $15.2 million in the period, also surpassing Street forecasts. Five analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $8.4 million.

For the year, the company reported that its loss narrowed to $130.4 million, or $1.56 per share. Revenue was reported as $97.1 million.

Alector shares have decreased 12% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Tuesday, shares hit $7.01, a drop of 20% in the last 12 months.
