Amy Schumer Thinks Clothes Shopping Is ‘Horrible’ and Trolls Balmain on Instagram
Amy Schumer can rock a Zac Posen leather dress at the Met Ball, but in her everyday life you won’t run into her at Barneys or Saks Fifth Avenue.
“I like going to Housing Works. I like old furniture and stuff like that. Shopping for clothes is horrible. I don’t know any girls who say I love it,” Schumer tells Yahoo Style.
It’s fitting, then, that Schumer’s character Emily gets fired from her retail job, and dumped by her boyfriend, at the start of her latest comedy, Snatched. She winds up on an ill-advised vacation with her mother (Goldie Hawn), and the two are kidnapped in the Amazonian jungle.
“There’s definitely parts of Emily that I relate to. I was kind of like, this is me if nothing bad had ever happened. Nothing gets her down. Everything is going to be cool,” says Schumer of her character.
She was interested in exploring the mother-daughter dynamic between wild-card Emily and her uptight mom. She and Hawn have tirelessly promoted the film together, and their bond is real, says Schumer. “Once I was able to get over the worship of her, we connected, as women and through the comedy. We speak the same language. It was really easy from the jump,” she says.
Schumer recently made headlines by fronting InStyle‘s first beauty issue in a sexy one-piece swimsuit. She oozed confidence and self-awareness. “I was really feeling myself that day. I felt strong and beautiful. Some days, I’m not feeling it. Day one of the time of the month you don’t want to be in a bathing suit,” she says.
In general, Schumer seems to have a relaxed attitude toward all things fashion and beauty. She attributes her porcelain skin to “makeup. Seriously. Lighting and makeup. I never had bad acne, and I sympathize with people that do. But my skin is blotchy and normal.”
As for style, she’s worn a tea-length Erdem dress in London and a graphic animal print Valentino in New York. Her fashion sense, she says, is “an ever-changing thing. I like being comfortable all the time. That comes first. Going to something like the Met Ball, you’re not going to be comfortable tonight.”
While getting dressed for the Snatched press junket, Schumer was offered options that included Spanx and corsetry.
“I didn’t even glance at them. I’m not going to be sitting, wearing those all day. I have an appreciation for fashion. I never set out to be too fashiony, but I like a cool outfit like anyone else,” she says.
Male comedians never get judged for what they wear while doing standup, and Schumer wants the same to apply to her. “It’s such a fine line. I can’t wear something where I’m taking a risk into the Comedy Cellar. You want your outfit to be pretty forgettable,” she says, and the focus to stay on what’s coming out of your mouth.

Speaking of mouthiness, anyone who follows Schumer on social media knows she tags many of her tongue-in-cheek posts with #Balmain or #Coachella, while doing things like hanging out with her sister.
When she’s asked about it, Schumer stresses that she has nothing — repeat, nothing — against designer clothes.
“They just seem to be taking themselves so seriously. It’s a whole thing. I don’t feel above it. I would be the last person to be in those [fashion ads], and it makes me laugh to tag it,” she says.
