News on the move: AG Barr threatens to skip House hearings, Avengers: Endgame crushes records
STAND-OFF BETWEEN ATTORNEY GENERAL BARR AND HOUSE DEMS
Attorney General William Barr is threatening to skip the House Judiciary Committee hearings this week. Barr is reportedly unhappy with the format which is slated as an ‘Executive Session’ and as such would be closed to the public and media, along with allowing extended time for questions. But the Democratic chairman of the committee, Jerrold Nadler (D) NY, said he would subpoena Barr if he refuses to testify on Thursday. Tensions between the Trump administration and House Democrats continue to elevate as the Dems continue to push for access to Mueller’s un-redacted report.
GUANTANAMO BAY COMMANDER FIRED
The Commander of Guantanamo Bay, Navy Rear Admiral John Ring, has been removed from his post after an investigation that opened last month. Ring was fired seven weeks before he was slated to leave his job with the official report citing “a loss of confidence in his ability,” adding: "This change in leadership will not interrupt the safe, humane, legal care and custody provided to the detainee population." Brig. Gen. John F. Hussey is now the acting commander.
APPLE ACCUSED OF UNFAIR BUSINESS PRACTICES
After the tech giant created its own app to track and monitor users screen time, Apple is now being accused of limiting the features on third-party apps — or removing them from app store entirely. Apple defended its actions, citing privacy concerns as the reason it forced developers to change certain features.
‘AVENGERS: ENDGAME’ CRUSHES BOX OFFICE RECORDS
Disney’s Avengers EndGame smashed box office records over the weekend taking in $1.2 billion globally. Disney-Marvel’s blockbuster brought in $350-million in North America, accounting for 4 out of every 5 tickets sold. And China proved to be a huge boon for the film with $329 million in ticket sales over a five day period. The film, the fourth and final ‘Avengers’ movie, topped its predecessor, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ by $560 million.
