New barbecue restaurant opens in Springfield while 2 new sushi, hibachi places open nearby

Cecil Turner knows a thing or two about barbecue.

“I’ve been barbecuing since I was 10 years old. I’m 77,” said Turner, whose family recently opened CD’s BBQ at 723 North Grand Ave. E. “So, I have a little experience.”

CD’s BBQ—christened with the first initials of Turner and his wife, Illinois Sen. Doris Turner, D-Springfield—is just a door down from the senator’s office. The barbecue joint shares an address with Brandy’s gaming parlor although the two businesses are not affiliated.

The menu features ribs, which can be purchased in whole or half slabs, rib tips and barbecue pork sandwiches with the meat sliced, not shredded. Side dishes include coleslaw and baked beans.

Operating hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Dine in and take out available. Phone: 217-670-1894.

Turner owns the business with his son Blake Turner and daughter Monte Turner.

The venture represents the septuagenarian’s second time selling his signature recipes, made with his own rub and sauce, to the general public. Turner owned Mr. Munch’s BBQ in the 1980s, which operated at 1831 South Grand Ave. E. that today houses Boyd’s New Generation.

New sushi options

Chatham has two new sushi options.

Sakuras Sushi has joined the Foxx Creek Plaza line up with the new restaurant opening at 1033 Jason Place.

And Tadashi Japanese Cuisine on Wheels served its first made-to-order sushi and hibachi dishes last weekend. The food truck, located at 404 E. Walnut St., even has an indoor waiting area.

Owner Hendrik Sumantri recently moved to Chatham after serving as a sushi chef for restaurants in Chicago, Seattle and Los Angeles.

Tadashi’s sushi rolls – which range in price from $9.95 to $12.95 – come wrapped with seaweed paper. Soy paper can be substituted for an additional $1.

For the hibachi meals, choose from chicken, steak, salmon, shrimp, scallops or a combination of proteins. Comes with vegetables and a choice of fried rice or Yakisoba noodles.

Starbucks coming soon?

Starbucks appears poised to open its first standalone store in Taylorville, although the Seattle-based chain isn’t spilling the tea yet.

Construction plans have yet to be filed, but the Taylorville City Council is expected to vote Monday on a request to subdivide the property on the city’s northern business district, just off State Route 29.

Taylorville Mayor Bruce Barry confirmed a standalone Starbucks with a drive through is planned for the site. A fall 2024 opening is the goal, he said.

The proposed site, just north of Steak ‘n Shake, formerly was owned by the Springfield-based Steak ‘n Shake franchise operator Stuller Inc. An official with Stuller Inc. confirmed the property was sold with plans for a Starbucks to be the burger joint’s new neighbor.

Starbucks officials, however, are remaining mum on the project.

“At this time, we remain focused on serving customers in the Taylorville area at our existing store and have no store-opening plans to announce,” read an email from a Starbucks spokesperson.

Starbucks’ caffeinated drinks and pastries already are available from a franchise site operated inside Krogers grocery, also located in Taylorville’s north end business district.

If indeed Starbuck’s caffeinated siren song is destined for Taylorville, it will be the second national brand to announce plans to open in the Christian County seat this year.

Sonic Drive-In is returning two decades after leaving the market. A spring opening is planned for the business at 929 W. Springfield St.
