On a per-share basis, the Franklin Lakes, New Jersey-based company said it had profit of 37 cents. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to $3.42 per share.

The results met Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of 10 analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was also for earnings of $3.42 per share.

The medical device manufacturer posted revenue of $5.09 billion in the period, surpassing Street forecasts. Eight analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $5.02 billion.

For the year, the company reported profit of $1.48 billion, or $4.94 per share. Revenue was reported as $19.37 billion.

Becton Dickinson expects full-year earnings in the range of $12.70 to $13 per share, with revenue in the range of $20.1 billion to $20.3 billion.

Becton Dickinson shares have climbed roughly 1% since the beginning of the year, while the S&P's 500 index has climbed 14%. The stock has climbed 17% in the last 12 months.
