It’s only been a few months since The Big Bang Theory left our screens for good, and already Mayim Bialik has got big plans for her next move.

The star, who played Amy Farrah-Fowler in the CBS sitcom, will make her screenwriting and directing debut with a comedy drama film based on her own life.

According to Deadline, As Sick As They Made Us follows a divorced mother as she attempts to help her estranged brother visit their dad on his deathbed.

As the family try to cope with the grief, sending them into disarray, the protagonist navigates new love while tackling a tricky relationship with her remaining relatives.

Speaking about the project at the Toronto Film Festival, she said: “Growing up surrounded by mental illness is not something that is easy to write about, nor is it easy to live through.

“The challenges ripple out into the lives of children immersed in these families even as they try to make their own lives apart from the challenges they grew up with.

“After my father’s passing four and a half years ago, I decided to explore the complexity of mental illness and familial responsibility – especially as it falls on women – as well as to highlight the redemptive nature of a family’s love as they navigate death and continue to live life on their own terms.”

The project follows the end of an epic 12-season run of The Big Bang Theory, which bid farewell in May with a bittersweet series finale that many fans described as a "perfect" goodbye to the sitcom.
