For those who still think that sustainable glamour is an oxymoron, last night’s Green Carpet Challenge Awards at Milan’s La Scala should go a long way toward changing their minds. The event, now in its second edition, is a sort of eco Oscars night, drawing a crowd from the fashion, film, and business communities, plus a chic contingent of Milanese society, all ready to support the cause.

Masterminded by Camera della Moda Chairman Carlo Capasa and by Livia Firth, EcoAge’s founder and Creative Director, the Awards were created in recognition of the contribution to global innovation made by the Italian fashion industry. This year’s impressive list of presenters included actresses Cate Blanchett and Julianne Moore; the Hollywood heartthrob Armie Hammer; and Hall-of-Fame supermodel Cindy Crawford. Recipients included Elle Macpherson; designer megastar Donatella Versace; entrepreneurs Diego Della Valle and Renzo Rosso; and critic extraordinaire Suzy Menkes.

The 14 awards recognized a vast gamut of achievements, ranging from the Eco Stewardship Award, granted to the Tasmanian Woolmark farmers, to the GCFA Leaders Award, bestowed upon educator, writer, and advocate Sinead Burke for her work around diversity and inclusiveness. Ferragamo’s cobblers, wearing their white working uniforms, received the Art of Craftsmanship Award, while the Franca Sozzani GCC Award for best emerging designer went to Gilberto Calzolari.

After the ceremony, guests were treated to an elegant dinner hosted by Carlo Capasa, Livia Firth, and Milan’s Mayor Giuseppe Sala across La Scala’s square at Palazzo Marino. The square had been transformed into a leafy eden whose lush plants will be donated to the City of Milan to be replanted. Vogue’s Hamish Bowles, the Creative Director of the event, also envisioned the poetic and sustainable tapestry covering the theater’s façade, woven from waste plastic into delightful motifs of chirping hummingbirds.
