City of Clemson will suspend open container laws if Tigers reach title game
If No. 1 Clemson beats No. 4 Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, Jan. 8 could turn into quite a day in downtown Clemson.
You see, a win over the Tide in the College Football Playoff semifinals would put the Tigers in the CFP title game for a third straight year. If that happens, the city of Clemson, South Carolina, has some special plans for its residents.
If the Tigers advance to the title game, a downtown viewing event would be scheduled for the evening of the game. With the event would come loosened open container laws.
In Monday night’s city council meeting, council members approved a downtown National Championship viewing event festival along with the suspension of open container laws starting at 6 p.m. on Jan. 8 if the Tigers go to the National Championship game. The council said it hopes to have a similar event to the 2017 National Championship where they close off College Avenue and bring in a Jumbotron so the community can watch the game.
City council won’t allow citizens to bring their own alcohol, but drinks can be purchased at downtown businesses.
That gives the folks of Clemson even more incentive for a win over Alabama. The Tigers beat the Tide in the title game last year, but fell to Nick Saban’s bunch the previous season. Perhaps part three can be the best yet.
The winner of the Sugar Bowl will face the winner of the Rose Bowl — Oklahoma or Georgia — for the national title Jan. 8.
