Complete List Of 178 New ETPs For 2012

Exchange-traded product launches numbered 178 in 2012. Despite the rapid start to the year, the final tally was only the fifth largest on record. The quantity represented a decrease of 42% from the record of 308 introductions set a year ago. New products in 2012 consisted of 155 ETFs and 23 ETNs. For actively managed ETFs, introductions picked up significantly over prior years with 18 (10.1%) of 2012’s launches fitting that description. Last year in 2011, despite the record number of new products coming to market, only five (1.6%) were billed as actively managed funds.
From a new product introduction viewpoint, 2012 was clearly the “year of the global and international ETF.” More than a third of the launches were categorized as Global & International. The 60 identified below would swell to 71 if the new Sector ETFs with a global or international universe were included.

The most prolific issuer of new products was BlackRock, which brought out 47 ETFs under the iShares brand. Trailing far behind were the second place finishers of First Trust and ProShares with 13 introductions each. New product counts for other prominent sponsors included 11 from State Street SPDRs, 7 each from Van Eck Market Vectors and Invesco PowerShares. Surprisingly, ETF behemoth Vanguard only brought one new ETF to market in 2012.
The table below lists all 178 new products sorted by name. The IPO date is the first day the product was listed and available for purchase. The “first trade” may be a later date in some cases, as a few products do not have any first-day volume. Additionally, the “inception date” listed by others for many ETFs is often a meaningless date as it is frequently a day or more before it actually becomes listed and available for purchase.
