Cornerback Darrelle Revis spent many years as one of the best defensive players in the NFL, but that seems like a long time ago.
Revis was signed late last season by the Kansas City Chiefs, played five regular-season games with the team and was cut on Thursday. It was no surprise Revis was cut, considering he had $8.8 million in roster bonuses that would have become guaranteed on March 18 according to Spotrac. There was no way he was going to remain with the Chiefs on that deal. It will be interesting to see what happens next with the former All-Pro cornerback.
Revis spent most of last season unsigned, partially because of offset language from his Jets contract. The Jets cut Revis after the 2016 season, and because of the offset language he basically was making the same amount of money whether he played in the NFL in 2017 or sat out. Now that he’s free again, what kind of market will there be? Revis will be 33 years old next season. He certainly won’t command a huge salary, and he’s used to being one of the highest-paid players in the NFL. He could probably still help some teams, even at his age, but those options might be limited and he might have to accept a role he’s not used to.
If this is the end of the road for Revis, he’ll probably end up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame someday. He is a seven-time Pro Bowler and a four-time All-Pro. Now we find out if Revis’ career continues, or that Hall of Fame eligibility clock starts ticking.
