If you want to compound wealth in the stock market, you can do so by buying an index fund. But one can do better than that by picking better than average stocks (as part of a diversified portfolio). To wit, the BWX Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:BWXT) share price is 19% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market decline of around 0.7% (not including dividends) in the same period. That's a solid performance by our standards! In contrast, the longer term returns are negative, since the share price is 0.5% lower than it was three years ago.

While this past week has detracted from the company's one-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Over the last twelve months, BWX Technologies actually shrank its EPS by 17%.

Given the share price gain, we doubt the market is measuring progress with EPS. Indeed, when EPS is declining but the share price is up, it often means the market is considering other factors.

We are skeptical of the suggestion that the 1.5% dividend yield would entice buyers to the stock. We think that the revenue growth of 6.8% could have some investors interested. We do see some companies suppress earnings in order to accelerate revenue growth.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that BWX Technologies shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 21% over the last year. And that does include the dividend. That certainly beats the loss of about 0.2% per year over the last half decade. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
