The latest message to emerge in the Sony hacking case appears to give the media giant permission to release The Interview, but is it really from the hacker group? The anonymous nature of the messages makes it hard to tell for certain.
With previous messages, it’s been verifiable that the poster was connected to the hacking, because the messages included leaked information: contact information, financial information, work and personal e-mails, and more, all of which verified that the messages and warnings came from someone whose threat to release more information was credible.
The latest message, which invites Sony to release The Interview, appeared on a filesharing site Thursday, but it did not include such identifiable information.

The Interview may release now.
But be carful.
September 11 may happen again if you don’t comply with the rules.

The message also seems to lack the odd sentence structure that marked previous messages. Furthermore, CNN reports that top executives at Sony received a message at about the same time, reinforcing directives not to release The Interview in any form, including allowing it to leak for piracy, and warning that the hackers still have more private data they can release if they choose.
The warning fits current events, as many influential people in Hollywood and in politics have spoken out for the release. George R. R. Martin, creator of Game Of Thrones, has offered to show the movie at his Santa Fe theater, the Jean Cocteau, if other theaters refuse. According to Torrent Freak, author Paul Coelho has offered to buy the rights to The Interview, and host it on his blog, allowing anyone who’d like to see it to view it for free.
Inviting Sony to release The Interview doesn’t fit with Guardians of Peace’s previous messages, and the message itself doesn’t fit. Without further verification, it seems unlikely the message is truly from the hacker group at all.
