"I'm not ranting and raving."

Donald Trump's words there, situated somewhere in the middle of one of the most ranting, raving press conferences ever delivered by an elected politician.

Yesterday the US President addressed the American people in a solo press conference to take on growing criticisms of his office and ongoing accusations of his administration's ties with the Russian government.

As expected, the conference quickly descended into a very Trumpian farce. For 90 long, increasingly confusing minutes (read the transcript here), Trump jumped erratically from topic to topic, trying in vain to convince the world that his government were not in the midst of chaos.

But amongst all the laments and falsities ("The leaks are absolutely real. The news is fake") he spouted, two words stuck out as the most terrifying.

Defending his relationship with Putin and the Kremlin, he said: "Putin probably assumes that he can't make a deal with me any more because politically it would be unpopular for a politician to make a deal."

Then he said this:

"Don't forget. We're a very powerful nuclear country and so are they. There's no upside [of a conflict]... I've been briefed. And I can tell you one thing about a briefing we're allowed to say because anyone who has ever read the most basic book can say it. A nuclear holocaust would be like no other."

Nuclear. Holocaust.

That, it seems, is the deal. Either the world leaves Trump alone to build a relationship with Putin in any way he sees fit, or we run the risk of a 'nuclear apocalypse', the two scariest words in the English language.

This comes after the Republican denied that Putin was testing him – despite Russia's deployment of a cruise missile and spy vessel off the US coast and the fact two Russian fighter jets that were reported to have flown dangerously close to a US Navy ship in the Black Sea.

Scary, scary times.
