Drakes' front office meets with community: Season two gets underway in May

Dec. 8—Jerry Bettencourt equated working for the Marysville Drakes to dating a woman who is "drop dead gorgeous."

"I absolutely love what I do," Bettencourt said. "If anybody has ever been to a game to see me announce and sing "Take me out to the ballgame," you know we have a lot of fun."

Bettencourt, who has been seen for many years up in the press box with the Yuba-Sutter Gold Sox and now the Drakes, was recently appointed as assistant general manager for this coming season — the Drakes' second in Marysville following the departure of the Gold Sox from Bryant Field.

Bettencourt, Field Manager Bill Rogan and Mike Williams, another new hire as Williams was brought on as Marysville's General Manager, met Wednesday with members of the community and city leaders at Pete's Restaurant and Brewhouse in Yuba City for the second annual Drakes Meet-and-Greet.

"We have a good group of people that is still here," Bettencourt said. "We are there everyday and we have an absolute blast."

Rogan was on hand, flying in the previous evening from Colorado, in part to don the team's 2024 uniforms. Rogan showed what his team will be wearing beginning in May when the 54-game season — 27 at home — gets underway in May.

Bettencourt added there will be four fireworks games this year.

While the uniform says Marysville, Rogan pointed out that it represents all of Yuba-Sutter.

"We're here in Yuba City (tonight), to me it is the same as Marysville, it's all our ballclub," Rogan said. "This is your team."

Last year being the Drakes' inaugural season in the Pecos League a lot of what took place was on an interim basis. Bettencourt, as he explained on Wednesday, wants people to know there will be changes with the team and how it operates this summer.

Bettencourt said he is in the process of putting together several committees, including an ambassador program that should help get the word out better about the Drakes' presence in Marysville.

Another committee will be the Steering Committee, which Bettencourt said is a group of folks who get together to see what is working and what is not.

Bettencourt is taking applications for anyone wanting to be on any of the Drakes' committees. He and the front office are also looking for host families and someone to perform the national anthem before each game.
