If You Like EPS Growth Then Check Out Legacy Housing (NASDAQ:LEGH) Before It's Too Late

It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Legacy Housing (NASDAQ:LEGH). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. How Fast Is Legacy Housing Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

Even with very modest growth rates, a company will usually do well if it improves earnings per share (EPS) year after year. So it's no surprise that some investors are more inclined to invest in profitable businesses. It's good to see that Legacy Housing's EPS have grown from US$1.10 to US$1.26 over twelve months. That's a 15% gain; respectable growth in the broader scheme of things.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Not all of Legacy Housing's revenue this year is revenue from operations, so keep in mind the revenue and margin numbers I've used might not be the best representation of the underlying business. Legacy Housing shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 21% to 23%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are Legacy Housing Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Many consider high insider ownership to be a strong sign of alignment between the leaders of a company and the ordinary shareholders. This makes me think they will be incentivised to plan for the long term - something I like to see. It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? Well, based on the CEO pay, I'd say they are indeed. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Legacy Housing with market caps between US$200m and US$800m is about US$2.0m.

You could consider this pay as somewhat symbolic, which suggests the CEO does not need a lot of compensation to stay motivated. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. I'd also argue reasonable pay levels attest to good decision making more generally.

One positive for Legacy Housing is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. Earnings growth might be the main game for Legacy Housing, but the fun does not stop there.
