What Exactly is Elite TikTok?
If you're a fan of TikTok, you're used to seeing teens dancing, pranks being pulled, and anthems for every situation possible, but have you ever seen a talking shampoo bottle? If not, you're not in on Elite TikTok, and you're totally missing out.
What is Elite TikTok?
Elite TikTok or Alt TikTok is a strange corner of the platform where there is no dancing or lip synching. Instead, it's filled with unexpected audios, weird visuals, and tons of inside jokes. There's definitely a superiority complex when it comes to Elite TikTokers as it takes time to curate your "for your page" to be filled with the oddities of Elite TikTok. If you are in on it, though, you're probably used to the common themes, like Jason Earles, frogs, and beans.
What about Retail TikTok?
Then, there's Retail TikTok, which is kind of a spin-off of Elite TikTok. Here, brands and products come to life and have personality traits. They get jealous of other brands, they flex their status, and they even have crushes.
On Retail TikTok, users create accounts for popular brands like @kraftcheeseofficial, @wholefoodsofficial, and @purellofficial...and yes, Jason Earles is often featured in these videos too.
None of these accounts are connected to the actual businesses or products they pose as, of course.
How did Elite TikTok get started?
While many of these accounts have been around for months, the trend has definitely picked up in the past couple of weeks, most likely out of boredom thanks to the stay-at-home orders in response to the Coronavirus. Every day more and more accounts are popping up and more trends are being created. It makes sense that as TikTok gets bigger and bigger different communities and niches are branching out and becoming popular.
Are any TikTok celebs involved?
Elite TikTok is pretty anti what they call "Straight TikTok" aka the videos that involved members of content houses and your standard singing and lip synching. That's why, when Hype House member Avani Gregg did a dance to an Alt TikTok audio making fun of "Straight TikTok," people were not happy.
Avani tweeted saying that she understands the joke, and she just doesn't care. She also called out TikTok for getting "worse with labels," though she later deleted the tweets.
