Exxon Mobil looking at natural gas production in Guyana after 2029
GEORGETOWN, Feb 21 (Reuters) - An Exxon Mobil -led consortium is considering its first offshore natural gas production in Guyana, possibly close to the country's maritime border with Suriname, an executive said on Wednesday.
Exxon and partners Hess Corp and CNOOC Ltd are under pressure from Guyana to develop the South American country's untapped natural gas. The group has discovered more than 11 billion barrels of oil and gas since the first discovery in 2015. "By early 2025 we will have done the exploration and appraisal work to understand how comfortable we are on the resource," Exxon's Guyana country manager Alistair Routledge said. "We won't make a final determination on the winning concept but we will be a lot closer."
The earliest the consortium could expect to start gas production in the prospective field near Suriname could be 2029 or 2030, he said.
