Fergie put her own spin on the national anthem at this year’s NBA All-Star Game, and the Internet wasn’t exactly raving about it. Following a peculiar musical theater–inspired opening—starring Kevin Hart, Queen Latifah, Rob Riggle, Adam Devine, and Ludacris, among others—and “O Canada,” sung by Barenaked Ladies, Fergie took to center court to attempt a soulful, slow-tempo take on “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Was it a nod to Marvin Gaye’s groovy spin on the song for the same event in 1983? Was it just a huge misfire? The most memorable reactions may have been on the NBA players’ faces (namely Draymond Green’s, caught on camera), but Twitter certainly joined in the fun.
