Frontier Developments plc (LON:FDEV) Analysts Just Slashed This Year's Estimates

In this article:

One thing we could say about the analysts on Frontier Developments plc (LON:FDEV) - they aren't optimistic, having just made a major negative revision to their near-term (statutory) forecasts for the organization. Both revenue and earnings per share (EPS) estimates were cut sharply as analysts factored in the latest outlook for the business, concluding that they were too optimistic previously.

After the downgrade, the consensus from Frontier Developments' twelve analysts is for revenues of UK£90m in 2024, which would reflect a chunky 14% decline in sales compared to the last year of performance. The loss per share is anticipated to greatly reduce in the near future, narrowing 53% to UK£0.26. However, before this estimates update, the consensus had been expecting revenues of UK£106m and UK£0.20 per share in losses. Ergo, there's been a clear change in sentiment, with the analysts administering a notable cut to this year's revenue estimates, while at the same time increasing their loss per share forecasts.

The consensus price target fell 19% to UK£3.82, with the analysts clearly concerned about the company following the weaker revenue and earnings outlook.

Taking a look at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can understand these forecasts is to see how they compare to both past performance and industry growth estimates. These estimates imply that sales are expected to slow, with a forecast annualised revenue decline of 14% by the end of 2024. This indicates a significant reduction from annual growth of 14% over the last five years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in the same industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 7.4% annually for the foreseeable future. So although its revenues are forecast to shrink, this cloud does not come with a silver lining - Frontier Developments is expected to lag the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to note from this downgrade is that the consensus increased its forecast losses this year, suggesting all may not be well at Frontier Developments. Regrettably, they also downgraded their revenue estimates, and the latest forecasts imply the business will grow sales slower than the wider market. Given the scope of the downgrades, it would not be a surprise to see the market become more wary of the business.

Even so, the longer term trajectory of the business is much more important for the value creation of shareholders. We have estimates - from multiple Frontier Developments analysts - going out to 2026, and you can see them free on our platform here.
