How I Met Your Father will center around protagonist and narrator Sophie who tells her son the story of how she met his father. Like the original series, How I Met Your Father goes back in time to the beginning, which in this case is 2021, to fully illustrate the picture. According to the show’s official logline, "Sophie and her close-knit group of friends are in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options."

When will How I Met Your Father premiere?

A premiere date for How I Met Your Father has not yet been announced. In late April, 10 episodes were ordered for the first season, which was actually the show’s third attempt for a spinoff. Originally, in 2014, HIMYM creators and writers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas with Emily Spivey wrote a pilot for CBS called How I Met Your Dad but it wasn’t picked up. Then in 2017, Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger did their own take on it, but it didn’t come to fruition because the duo was promoted from executive producers to showrunners for the hit NBC drama This Is Us. With their hands full, the project was brought to a halt.

Now, Carter, Craig, Isaac and Elizabeth are all back for How I Met Your Father as executive producers. “Kids, I’m going to tell you an incredible story: It’s the story of how two writers got lucky enough to make their dream TV show for nine seasons and now get to pass the torch to an inspired new creative team with their own incredible story to tell, the story of How I Met Your Father,” Carter and Craig said, per Deadline. “We are honored by their passion and vision, and look forward to helping them tell a legendary new story. Thanks to all the HIMYM fans out there who waited for it.”

Isaac and Elizabeth added: "We are beyond excited to be bringing How I Met Your Father to Hulu. Carter and Craig’s iconic original series revolutionized the half-hour comedy, and we are so honored to be carrying the torch forward for the next generation — and with Hilary Duff no less! We can’t wait for audiences to meet Sophie and her crew, and watch them come into their own and find love in modern-day New York City. And we hope nobody thinks it’s weird that Bob Saget will be playing old Hilary Duff’s voice.”

Who will be in the How I Met Your Father cast?

The cast of How I Met Your Father will officially include:

  • Hilary Duff as Sophie

  • Francia Raísa as Valentina, Sophie’s roommate

  • Chris Lowell as Jesse, an aspiring musician and part-time Uber driver

  • Tien Tran as Ellen, Jesse’s adopted sister

  • Suraj Sharma as Sid, Jesse’s roommate and best friend

  • Tom Ainsley as Charlie, Valentina’s beau

  • Brandon Michael Hall as Ian, Sophie’s Tinder match

In the press release shared by Deadline, Hilary also expressed her excitement to do the HIMYM fandom justice as a fellow viewer herself. “I’ve been incredibly lucky in my career to play some wonderful characters and I’m looking forward to taking on the role of Sophie,” she said. “As a huge fan of How I Met Your Mother, I’m honored and even a little nervous that Carter and Craig would trust me with the sequel of their baby."
