Ikea Turned Its Blue Shopping Bag Into a Celebration of Pride Month
Ikea is so cool now that we can't keep up with the collaborations. But its latest release doesn't have Virgil Abloh, Sonos speakers, or Solange tacked onto it. Its latest release is a partnership with the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRCF). For Pride Month in June, Ikea turned its iconic Frakta shopping bag-usually sporting bright blue with a yellow-and-blue strap-into a multicolored rainbow version called the Kvanting. You can spot the traditional Frakta bag from three city blocks away; in rainbow, it'll stand out even in a Pride Parade.
And even cooler is that Ikea is donating all of the profits from the bag sales to HRCF programs that support LGBTQIA+ children, youth, and families. The limited-edition bag will be sold in Ikea stores for $3.99, starting June 1.
LGBTQIA+ rights marked a historic event this week: the passage of the Equality Act in the U.S. House of Representatives. It's the first time the House has passed a comprehensive bipartisan civil rights act aimed at protecting LGBTQIA+ Americans from discrimination based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. Unfortunately, it'll take a miracle to get it passed in the Senate, and the HRCF will be the first to tell you that there is much work yet to be done, especially when states are taking hateful, dangerous actions right and left that endanger LGBTQIA+ people.
And sure, buying a colorful Ikea Kvanting bag won't fix our messed up world, but it'll do its small part to help. And because Pride celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, it's worth dressing up your accessories for the occasion. Pride month technically lasts just 30 days, but this bag will last you much longer, so you can keep taking Pride with you-whether that's to the laundromat, the subway, or back to Ikea again in the fall.
