Dr. Gomez says that back conditions can be divided into three categories: mechanical lower back pain, nerve root pain, and serious conditions, or “red flags”. He says that most conditions are mechanical issues, such as lumbar and sacroiliac sprains, lumbar muscle strains, facet syndrome, degenerative disc disease, or other such problems that don’t include numbness or weakness.
