Index, ETF option volumes near midday
Total option volume is 5.4 million contracts so far today, with mixed activity in the major indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 518,000 contracts traded, with 303,000 puts. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has seen 201,000 turn over, led by 160,000 calls.
The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options have traded 140,000 times, with 77,000 puts. The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) has 129,000 contracts change hands, with a put/call ratio topping 2 to 1. Close behind is the iShares Real Estate Fund (IYR) with volume of 128,000, dominated by 116,000 puts.
Just behind is the PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) at 121,000 contracts, with calls slightly outpacing puts. The SPDR Utilities Fund (XLU) has 87,000 options traded, with 62,000 puts. And the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) has 86,000 contracts moving, with 52,000 puts.
