Index, ETF option volumes near midday

Total option volume is more than 5.6 million contracts so far today, but the major indexes and ETFs aren't contributing as much as usual, optionMONSTER's data systems show.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (SPY) has 669,000 options traded, led by 403,000 puts. The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options have turned over 197,000 times, with 130,000 puts.

Just under 146,000 of the PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) options have changed hands, with calls outpacing puts. Following are the CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) contracts at 135,000, with calls outpacing puts by more than 3 to 1.

The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) barely tops 100,000 contracts, dominated by 72,000 puts. The SPDR Gold Shares Fund (GLD) has 89,000 options traded, with 52,000 puts. And the iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) has 59,000 contracts moving, 35,000 of which of are puts.
