Index, ETF volumes near midday
Just over 5.8 million options have changed hands so far today, with mixed action in the top indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has seen 721,000 options trade, with 430,000 puts. Next up are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options at 220,000, with 150,000 puts.
The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) options have turned over 184,000 times, with calls outpacing puts by more than 3 to 1. Just behind is the PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) at 178,000 options, with 99,000 puts. The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (:VXX) has 151,000 options traded, 83,000 of which are puts.
The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has 135,000 contracts changing hands, with 87,000 puts. The Market Vectors Gold Miners Fund (GDX) has 103,000 options moving, led by 76,000 calls. And the SPDR Gold Fund (GLD) has 94,000 options traded, evenly split between calls and puts.
