Initial Wis. jobless claims fall to lowest point since '07; below 8K for 5th straight week
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Initial unemployment claims in Wisconsin have dropped to their lowest level since 2007.
Gov. Scott Walker's administration said Thursday that initial claims for Wisconsin unemployment insurance have fallen below 8,000 for five consecutive weeks. Wisconsin has not had five straight weeks with initial claims below 8,000 since 2005.
Wisconsin weekly initial claims first dipped below 8,000 in the week ending July 20, 2013. That's the first time they've been less than 8,000 since September 2007.
The number has remained below 8,000 through the week ending Aug. 17. It's the first time Wisconsin has seen five straight weeks with initial claims below 8,000 since 2005 and only the second time since 2000.
Department of Workforce Development Secretary Reggie Newson says in a statement it's another sign of Wisconsin's improving economy.
