Liberty Mutual has cut 75 jobs in Columbus two years after it bought insurer State Auto Financial.

The jobs are among 370 positions the Boston-based insurer has eliminated nationwide, the company said. The cuts represents less than 1% of the company's total workforce.

In Columbus, the 75 jobs represent about 4% of the company's workforce here. Liberty Mutual has about 1,700 workers here.

Most of the cuts will become effective by the end of September, according to the company.

The cuts are part of organizational changes that Liberty Mutual has announced, including creation of a new business unit meant to deepen focus on the company's personal and small commercial lines.

Liberty Mutual has said each affected worker has been encouraged to apply for other positions within the company or will receive severance and outplacement assistance.

Separately, Columbus-based Grange Insurance also has cut 75 jobs across all of its offices as part of a move to become more efficient.

The cuts became effective this month.

The cuts are in the insurer's technology area with nearly half of the affected workers being placed with a Grange technology vendor, the company said.

"These decisions are never taken lightly, and we always strive to treat the impacted associates respectfully, including the offer of severance, continuation of health care benefits and outplacement to assist with their transition," the company said in a statement.
