Investors in Colabor Group (TSE:GCL) have seen strong returns of 149% over the past five years

In this article:

It might be of some concern to shareholders to see the Colabor Group Inc. (TSE:GCL) share price down 14% in the last month. But that scarcely detracts from the really solid long term returns generated by the company over five years. Indeed, the share price is up an impressive 149% in that time. We think it's more important to dwell on the long term returns than the short term returns. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean it's cheap now.

So let's assess the underlying fundamentals over the last 5 years and see if they've moved in lock-step with shareholder returns.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the last half decade, Colabor Group became profitable. Sometimes, the start of profitability is a major inflection point that can signal fast earnings growth to come, which in turn justifies very strong share price gains. Given that the company made a profit three years ago, but not five years ago, it is worth looking at the share price returns over the last three years, too. Indeed, the Colabor Group share price has gained 34% in three years. During the same period, EPS grew by 7.4% each year. This EPS growth is lower than the 10% average annual increase in the share price over three years. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did three years ago.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Colabor Group shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 47% over one year. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 20% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
