Investors in MIND C.T.I (NASDAQ:MNDO) have unfortunately lost 0.3% over the last year

In this article:

The simplest way to benefit from a rising market is to buy an index fund. Active investors aim to buy stocks that vastly outperform the market - but in the process, they risk under-performance. That downside risk was realized by MIND C.T.I. Ltd (NASDAQ:MNDO) shareholders over the last year, as the share price declined 11%. That's well below the market return of 20%. At least the damage isn't so bad if you look at the last three years, since the stock is down 3.4% in that time. The share price has dropped 14% in three months.

So let's have a look and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Unfortunately MIND C.T.I reported an EPS drop of 14% for the last year. The share price fall of 11% isn't as bad as the reduction in earnings per share. It may have been that the weak EPS was not as bad as some had feared.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, MIND C.T.I's TSR for the last 1 year was -0.3%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

MIND C.T.I shareholders are down 0.3% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 20%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 9%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand MIND C.T.I better, we need to consider many other factors. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for MIND C.T.I (of which 2 can't be ignored!) you should know about.
