Jon Gruden on loss to Dolphins, Raiders' 0-3 start: 'My responsibility to fix it'
The awful start to the second Jon Gruden tenure with the Oakland Raiders went to script on Sunday.
Early Sunday, NFL Network reported that there was a front-office rift between between Gruden hires and holdovers from the previous regime over how he breaks down film and analyzes talent.
Later, the Raiders blew a first half-lead against the Miami Dolphins in a 28-20 loss. It’s the third time in three games the Raiders have lost this season after leading at halftime as opponents have appeared to consistently have an edge after making halftime adjustments.
After the game, Gruden acknowledged that the responsibility from those late game collapses may lie on him and his staff rather than player execution on the field.
“That’s just my responsibility to fix it,” Gruden told reporters.
Gruden, who has insisted on sticking to old-school methods of team building and analysis after a 10-year gap from coaching, then offered up coach speak talking up Oakland’s opponents, while promising to go to work.
“We have a lot of work to do here,” Gruden said. “We’re going to continue to work. I’m proud of the way we’re competing,” Gruden said. “We played three teams, I think, that might be undefeated. I don’t know. We’ve played three good football teams. We played them hard. We have a lot of work to do here. We’ll continue to work and we’ll get this show on the road here hopefully soon.”
