Jon Stewart accuses Mitch McConnell of playing politics with 9/11 fund
Jon Stewart joined The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Monday night where, once again, he popped out from under Colbert’s desk, this time to respond to what Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had said on Fox & Friends earlier in the day.
Last week Stewart made an impassioned speech before Congress asking that they pass a bill extending the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, and on Sunday, he went on Fox News and blamed McConnell for Congress’s delay.
When asked about Stewart on Monday, McConnell said, “We have never failed to address this issue and we will address it again. I don’t know why he’s all bent out of shape.” He later added, “It sounds to me like he’s looking for some way to take offense.”
Stewart responded by saying, “I’m bent out of shape for them. These are the first heroes, and veterans, and victims of the great trillions-of-dollars war on terror. And they’re currently still suffering, and dying and in terrible need.”
Stewart even went so far as to accuse McConnell of playing politics with the lives of 9/11 first responders.
“You love the 9/11 community when they serve your political purposes,” Stewart said, “but when they’re in urgent need you slow walk, you dither, you use it as a political pawn to get other things you want, and you don’t get the job done completely.”
Stewart then told McConnell how to find out for himself why he, and others, are so bent out of shape.
“If you wanna know why the 9/11 community is bent out of shape over these past, let’s call it 18 years,” Stewart said, “meet with them tomorrow, as soon as possible, and don’t make them beg for it.”
The 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund is set to expire next year. The new bill that Stewart is supportin would extend the fund until 2090.
