When is the last day to file taxes? The important dates Iowans should know for 2024

The deadline to file your federal income tax return is rapidly approaching, so save yourself the scramble and familiarize yourself with these important dates.

Federal return processing and Iowa’s income tax season began on Jan. 29.

The IRS recommends organizing your tax records (such as a form W-2 from your employer or a form 1099 for payments not from your employers) for an easier filing experience, and to ensure you avoid errors that might lead to delays in you getting your refund.

When are taxes due?

Federal taxes are due on Monday, April 15.

Iowa state income tax returns are due Tuesday, April 30.

When can I request an extension to file my taxes?

You have up until Monday, April 15 to request an extension if you need more time to file your taxes. Then, you’ll have through Tuesday, Oct. 15 to file your taxes.

When will I get my tax refund?

If you submitted your refund electronically, it’ll take up to 21 days to get your return, according to the IRS. Anticipate four weeks or more for amended returns and returns sent by mail. You can track your refund online at irs.gov/wheres-my-refund. Information about refund status is updated daily.

You can also track your Iowa tax refund on tax.iowa.gov for individual income tax returns and amended individual income tax returns that you’ve filed. Iowa returns typically take about 30 days to process.

Do I have to file a tax return?

If you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien, whether you need to file a federal income tax return depends on your gross income, your filing status such as whether you’re single or married, your age and whether you’re a dependent.

The general guidelines on who needs to file, according to the IRS, are:

  • Your gross income is over the filing requirement, which can be found online at IRS.gov.

  • You have over $400 in net earnings from self-employment

  • You had other situations that would require you to file. Those situations are listed online at IRS.gov.
