Luke List breaks putter, sinks 18-foot birdie putt with his wedge
Luke List had fallen down three shots through his first seven holes on Wednesday afternoon against Justin Thomas at the World Golf Championship-Dell Technologies Match Play in Austin.
Walking to the 8th tee, List was visibly frustrated. Still carrying his putter, he swung it through the air, trying to take a swipe through some bushes. What he didn’t see, though, was the small wall.
List’s putter slammed into the brick wall, bending it too much for him to continue using for the rest of the round.
“It bent the putter a fraction of an inch just below the grip,” List told the PGA TOUR’s Jonathan Wall after the round. “Unfortunately I couldn’t use the putter the rest of the way. It was stupid on my part.”
List, now without a putter, started using his lob wedge on the greens. Finally, his day turned around. He halved the next five holes, and then birdied three of his next four holes. Before he knew it, he and Thomas were head-to-head going into the final hole.

Yet it was List’s putt — or chip, rather — on No. 15 that turned heads. List knocked down an 18-foot putt for birdie from just off the side of the green, again with his lob wedge.

Thomas, though, made birdie on the final hole to take the opening match.
