Many Still Looking Away From Boxlight Corporation (NASDAQ:BOXL)

In this article:

You may think that with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x Boxlight Corporation (NASDAQ:BOXL) is a stock worth checking out, seeing as almost half of all the Tech companies in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.3x and even P/S higher than 4x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does Boxlight's Recent Performance Look Like?

Recent times have been advantageous for Boxlight as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to dive, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Boxlight would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 4.9%. The latest three year period has seen an incredible overall rise in revenue, even though the last 12 month performance was only fair. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 5.9% as estimated by the three analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 3.4% growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Boxlight's P/S sits behind most of its industry peers. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Final Word

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Boxlight's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't contributing to its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. The reason for this depressed P/S could potentially be found in the risks the market is pricing in. While the possibility of the share price plunging seems unlikely due to the high growth forecasted for the company, the market does appear to have some hesitation.
