Cuban laughed it off with a joke to the media.
Owner upset at Cuban for leaking info
This time, the ding to Cuban’s massive net worth — recently estimated at $4.1 billion — was attached to last week’s reports that the NBA would implement coach’s challenges for the upcoming season, reports that the league eventually confirmed.
But news broke before the league made the news official, and one competing owner was not happy about it, ESPN reports.
According to Tim McMahon, Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadive was concerned about the leak that emitted from last week’s Board of Governors meeting.
NBA fines Cuban $50K
Cuban fessed up to the leak, according to the report, and the NBA docked him $50,000 for violating a rule prohibiting sharing information publicly from the meeting.
The league didn’t announce the fine publicly but issued a memo to teams about it, according to the report.
Cuban’s retort
For that fact, Cuban saw the irony and pounced on it in his comment to McMahon about the fine.
"I appreciate the irony of your reporting on a fine that someone should, but won't get fined for leaking to you," Cuban told ESPN.
The opportunity alone to take that dig at the NBA was probably worth the $50,000 for Cuban.
