It's a pretty daunting job following in the footsteps of Dame Julie Andrews, but there was one thing Emily Blunt didn't have to worry about in Mary Poppins Returns.

Because, apparently, she's not practically perfect in every way.

Speaking to Mail Online at yesterday's (December 12) premiere, Emily Blunt revealed that she was relieved not to be taking on the songs of the original Disney classic.

"Thank god I’m not singing 'A Spoonful of Sugar'," she confessed. "I was never going to be singing the original music.

"I don’t think I could have done if we were."

Fortunately, thanks to the help of maestro Lin-Manuel Miranda, Emily – who can actually sing – was given numbers that had been especially written for her.

Talking about her take on Mary Poppins, Emily said: "The songs were put on me like tailor-made suits." We wouldn't have expected anything less.

Although Mary Poppins Returns is a family film, there were elements of the production that terrified Blunt – even more than the prospect of singing a Julie Andrews song.

Recalling their re-imagining of Mary's iconic umbrella scene, Emily admitted that her overriding feeling during filming was whether she was "going to die".

"I'm not amazing with heights and it was one of those things where they kind of winch you up there and there's the moment before they bring you down for the shot, and it just seems like that moment extends to forever", she said.

A spoonful of sugar would have probably helped with that.

The supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Mary Poppins Returns will hit US cinemas on December 19 and UK cinemas on December 21.
